Doug, now with more expression

Doug, I think, has been hoping for a portrait for a while. Last time I started drawing him, though, his lighting was terrible, and he suddenly stopped moving, keeping unnaturally rigid when he realized I was drawing him. While this can be helpful in certain situations, he looked too stony, and without life, so I gave up the drawing and told him not to attempt keeping still for my sake. So when I tried again on Friday, he ignored me.

Sometimes I appreciate the challenge of capturing people while they're being animated. Part of it is that I can pick an expression and angle without impeding the conversation in the room or moving to a different couch. The drawings end up more life-like, less stony. And sometimes I start two drawings at a time, one for different angles if they're looking back and forth a lot, or of different people so I can do whichever one is in the pose I need and swap when they move. No, it doesn't always work.
