Printmaking thumbnails

in

Thumbnails for the lino print I want to do next.

Not sure how well I'm going to be able to update this every week this month. Between extra day-job hours, projects possibly not appropriate for this blog, and other life going-ons, I may not have stuff to post here.

Stone Circle - an exercise in revisiting

I took a class in watercolor back in college. Our teacher had us paint very large (for watercolor), which was strange for me, as I was used to working very small and tightly. I used a photograph of a local landmark as the subject matter for my painting.

I enjoyed the effects I got in the rocks, and feel I learned a lot about using the medium, though it's been years since I put the techniques to use. Sometimes I miss watercolors, though 22x30 is pretty huge for me to work with them.

Later in college I took a printmaking class, and decided to revisit the image with linoleum. Looking back I could have used more contrast and lighter areas, and I'd like to try carving foliage again sometime soon.

When I took up oils a few years ago, I wanted to try my hand at a landscape, and figured I may as well revisit the stone circle again. The image was one that my best friend had always been a fan of, so I jumped on the "excuse" to paint it again and gift her the new one.

I thought a lot about happy little trees while painting this, and tried many different new techniques on this one to see what I could do, since the medium was new for me.

In the master copies I have lined up, I'm trying to pick ones both with the types of figurative work I enjoy, as well as background landscapes I would like to be able to emulate.

Beginning Bouguereau's Childhood Idyll

I'll have to get a better photo of this one; shooting at night with poor lighting is no good. I tried to digitally edit the colors back to a semblance of realistic, but I ended up with some strange artifacts.

Here's the second of my Bouguereau-copies started. Penciled on canvas. I put a couple coats of matte medium on this one in an attempt to level out the canvas texture so it wouldn't bug me as much.

I'm trying to get the hang of indicating leaves and foliage. I'm not sure I'm really getting it.. But that's why I'm doing this. And why I'm planning to do a substantial number of these.

Completed Bouguereau's Meditation

I'm calling this one completed, and moving on to learn more from the next piece. Trying to keep a fresh look, and know when it's time to move on. I may still opt to go back and work on the face some more in this one, but not right now.

I've already started in on the next Bouguereau piece I wanted to try. And I have handful of others (by various artists) penciled onto canvas.
Among the other projects I've been working on, I modified some new pants (still need to get photos), and spent time readying some new chine colle papers:

I spray white unryu paper with watered down acrylic to get tinted sheets that I know will be more lightfast than other handmade versions, and then coat the back with nori paste.

Almost finished with Bouguereau's Meditation

I got a bit further with this piece on my painting day this week (on which I also managed to catch up on some of my lost sleep from day job hours). I still need to smooth our her skin tones, head-cloth and hair, and finish the foliage in the lower left, and then I'll call it done and move onto the next.

I've also gotten some coding done on my website, and will soon have thumbnails available on the bottom of my portfolio image pages to all the pieces in my online portfolio (so you don't have to click back all the time).
